Bantz Announces Selection of Dean for School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences

IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz today announced the selection of Dr. Augustine (Austin) Agho as the Dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees. Agho is currently the founding Dean of the School of Health Professions and Studies at the University of Michigan-Flint, a position he has held since 2001. Agho will assume his new duties at IUPUI on July 14, 2008

"Dr. Agho's service as the founding dean of a School of Health Professions and Studies, his expertise in health administration, and successful research career make him the right choice to lead the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences," said IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz. "We are very pleased he is joining IUPUI--Indiana's urban research and academic health sciences campus."

One of his noteworthy accomplishments at the University of Michigan-Flint was to play a critical role in developing and implementing the Urban Health and Health Center. Agho's responsibilities included managing the School's departments and undergraduate/graduate programs in anesthesia, health administration, health education, health science, medical technology, nursing, physical therapy, and radiation therapy. He was very successful in identifying and developing new resources for faculty and programs and working with departments to devise creative strategies to enhance diversity at all levels and expand ties to the external health care community.

He brings years of academic and administrative experience to IUPUI. Before his current appointment in Flint, Agho served as the Director of the Division of Health Care Management in the School of Allied Health Sciences at Florida A&M University from 1992 to 2001. He was promoted to the rank of full professor with tenure in 1997. Prior to that, from 1989 to 1992, Agho was an Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois-Springfield. Over the years, he has taught courses in the areas of health care research, health care management, long-term care administration, critical health issues, and strategic planning. He is the author of numerous scientific papers on research funded from a wide variety of federal and state sources. Agho's teaching and research efforts have been recognized by two Teacher of the Year Awards from Florida A&M University (1999 and 2001) and the National HBCU Research Network (2000).

Agho received a Bachelors of Arts (Cum Laude) in Management Science in 1983 from Alaska Pacific University, a Master's degree in Health Administration from Governors State University and a Ph.D. in Hospital and Health Administration from the University of Iowa in 1989. He will succeed Dr. Joyce Mac Kinnon, who has been serving as the Interim Dean of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences since July 2007.
