IUPUI Director Ian McIntosh at International Peace Conference

Every two years, peace researchers from around the world gather to exchange ideas and experiences, to initiate joint projects, and develop new avenues for research. The International Peace Research Association (IPRA) conference focuses on the most urgent challenges for peace.

This year the conference is being held in Leuven, Belgium, from July 14-19.

IUPUI's Director of International Partnerships, Dr. Ian McIntosh, who teaches a class on Truth and Reconciliation at IUPUI, will address the conference on the subject of 'measuring reconciliation'. He will also act as Chair and Discussant for two major sessions connected with reconciliation studies. One will focus on global reconciliatory movements, and the other on reconciliation trends in South Africa.

The overall theme of the 2008 conference is 'Building Sustainable Futures - Enacting Peace and Development', which draws attention to the dis-synergetic interaction between economic development, environmental change and conflict management efforts in the 21st century. It has become clear that sustainable development should be given first priority, however, achieving sustainable development is impossible without adequate efforts to build sustainable peace at national, regional and global levels. One of the problems is that too many of today's so called peace interventions are pacification efforts; they do not address the root causes and indirect sources of violence.

The conference is made up of plenary sessions, which focus on: Human Security and Development • African Peace Building • Peace Research in Latin America • Listening to the Middle East • Peace and Intellectual Solidarity • Effective Non-Violent Policy-Making • Youth and Conflict/Peace • Faith in Peace
