Psychology Professor to Lead Research and Graduate Education for theSchool of Science

— School of Science Acting Dean Bart S. Ng has appointed psychology professor James M. Murphy as associate dean for research and graduate education. He will assume the position on July 1, 2008.

"Professor Murphy has compiled an outstanding record of research accomplishments in psychobiology during his 29 years at IUPUI," said Ng. "He brings to the position a wealth of experience in research management and interdisciplinary proposal development. I look forward to his leadership as the School of Science continues to enhance our research and graduate education infrastructure."

Specializing in psychopharmacology, neurochemistry and neurobiology of behavior, Murphy is recognized nationally for his research of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. He studies hereditary predispositions to excessive alcohol drinking behavior, sensitivity to alcohol and tolerance to alcohol. He is the author of numerous papers and journal articles.

"I'm energized by the health and life sciences research portfolios of faculty in the School of Science," said Murphy, who earned a Ph.D. in biopsychology from Bowling Green State University in 1978.

"I share Acting Dean Ng's vision for building stronger interdisciplinary collaborations across campus and with Indiana's life sciences companies. Doing so will take the School of Science to the forefront of research, scholarly activity and graduation education."

Murphy holds faculty appointments in the Department of Psychology, where he is the director of the psychobiology of addictions graduate program, and the Institute of Psychiatric Research in the IU School of Medicine. He succeeds Pamela L. Crowell, who now is vice president for research at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.
