Hundreds of Bikes Take to Streets for June 28 N.I.T.E. Ride
On Saturday, June 28, 2008, hundreds of bike riders again will take to the streets for a 20-mile late night jaunt around downtown Indianapolis, including the IUPUI campus. IUPUI students who live on campus, and medical personnel traveling to and from the IUPUI campus during ride hours should preview advised alternate travel directions.
The N.I.T.E. (Navigate Indy This Evening) Ride will begin at 11:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at the Major Taylor Velodrome with riders following a course that, in general, will take them south along the White River, east along New York Street, and north along Meridian Street to 49th Street, before heading back to the Velodrome. The event is billed as a tour, not a race.
Late-night motorists and pedestrians can expect to find road closures for at least 45 minutes at any point along the ride route. Alternative travel routes have been designated for IUPUI students living on campus, as well as IU, Riley, Wishard, VA, and Methodist medical personnel who require access to or from the ride area bounded by 10th Street, University Boulevard, Michigan Street, and Porto Alegre Street.
Event organizers say the ride will last until at least midnight and will continue to impact the area until 1 a.m. the following morning. Event organizers advise those traveling to and from areas impacted by the ride to heed the instructions of Indianapolis police officers who will be directing traffic, as their directions may be subject to change without notice as circumstances require.
For complete details about the ride, include a map of the ride route, and alternate travel routes for those not participating in the ride, go to: http://www.niteride.org/faq.html.
