Academic Affairs Appoints Two New Faculty Fellows

The Office of the Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties is pleased to announce the appointment of Bessie House-Soremekun and Lisa Riolo as Faculty Fellows in the Office of Academic Affairs.

Bessie House-Soremekun, Public Scholar in African American Studies, Civic Engagement, and Entrepreneurship, Professor of Political Science, Professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies, and Adjunct Professor of Philanthropy joined IUPUI in 2007. During her previous 18 years at Kent State University in the Political Science Department, she founded and directed the Center for the Study and Development of Minority Businesses in addition to establishing three additional entrepreneurial training centers in collaborative partnerships with community leaders in Cleveland and Youngstown. As a Public Scholar in the School of Liberal Arts, Professor House-Soremekun has hit the ground running, having already established rich networks with both the IUPUI and the Indianapolis communities.

Lisa Riolo, Frances C. Ekstam Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy, in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Affiliated Scientist, Center for Aging Research, and Affiliated Scientist, Center for Bioethics, joined IUPUI in 2004. Prior to her appointment here, she served as Associate Professor and Jill Pitman Jones Professor of Physical Therapy in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Since coming to IUPUI, Professor Riolo effectively led recruitment efforts to expand and develop the faculty, and has overseen the hiring of seven of the department's nine faculty members. Working with her faculty to create the department's first vision and mission statement and to develop its strategic plan, she provided the leadership to achieve a commendable accreditation review.

The Academic Affairs Faculty Fellow position is a half-time appointment for two years. Both Professor House-Soremekun and Professor Riolo will begin their duties on August 1, 2008.
