IUPUI Sets April 9 as Official Dedication Day for New Campus Center

Updated on March 28, 2008

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will host an official dedication ceremony for the new IUPUI Campus Center at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, at the center, 420 University Blvd.

John Gardner, an international expert on the first-year college experience, will deliver the keynote address following greetings from IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz.

IU President Michael McRobbie will preside over the dedication of the Campus Center.

"The dedication of the Campus Center symbolizes a new era at IUPUI," says IUPUI Campus Director Daniel Maxwell. "The Campus Center provides a 'community center' for the students, faculty and staff to gather, to be engaged in the numerous activities associated with the campus, to relax and study, to get involved in our campus life and to plan our future. April 9 will be a day of celebration and the beginning of new traditions at IUPUI."

Located at the heart of the IUPUI campus, the new $56 million IUPUI Campus Center houses several campus eateries, along with the offices of the registrar, admissions and student financial aid, a Barnes and Noble Bookstore, Campus Center Administration Office, Campus Center Information Desk, the Student Life/Dean of Student Suite, the Student Organization Center, and the United States Postal Service Contract Station.

The dedication ceremony is one of several events being held April 9 to celebrate the grand opening of the building.

A Campus Center Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and Interfaith Building Blessing Ceremony will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on April 9.

Former Indy Car driver and "Race to Win" author Derek Daly will hold a book signing from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Barnes & Noble at IUPUI. Barnes & Noble was the first tenant to set up shop in the Campus Center, opening to students in late December 2008.

Other dedication day activities include balloon sculpture building from 8 a.m. to noon; a Student Music Showcase from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Citizens Commons Food Court; an Athletics Pep Rally from 2 to 2:45 p.m.; and a cake and punch reception from 5 to 6 p.m. on all floors of the Campus Center.

To RSVP for the ceremony and reception, individuals should call 317-278-8511 or e-mail maxwelld@iupui.edu.

In addition to the April 9 activities, other events are being held throughout April to commemorate the opening of the building being called "the Center of Student Life" at IUPUI. Those events include a campus lecture by Lisa Ling, host of National Geographic's "Ultimate Explorer" and former host of "The View," from 7 to 9 p.m., April 23, 2008, in Room 450 of the Campus Center.
