Murtadha Awarded Madame C. J. Walker Outstanding Woman of the Year Award

The Center for Leadership Development (CLD) presented Khaula Murtadha, professor, Educational Leadership, IU School of Education at IUPUI, with its 2008 Madame C. J. Walker (Outstanding Woman of the Year) Award.

The award will be presented Monday, March 17, at the CLD's 28th annual Minority Business and Professional Achievers Recognition Awards Dinner at the Indiana Convention Center. Murtadha was among 17 individuals honored at the event.

The Center for Leadership Development is a non-profit organization whose mission is to foster the advancement of minority youth in Central Indiana as future professional, business and community leaders by providing experiences that encourage personal development and educational attainment.

Murtadha has been instrumental in furthering the work of the Center for Urban and Multicultural Education and helping to establish the Urban Center for the Advancement of Science/Mathematics Education at IUPUI. Murtadha has also been involved in the recruitment of a more diverse faculty and staff.

As a former kindergarten teacher and principal, Murtadha is committed to strengthening school-business-community partnerships. She was one of the primary leaders of the Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet School and is involved with bridges to success. Additionally, Murtadha regularly works with school-based programs to support children and families who live in poverty.

CLD President Dennis E. Bland stated, "Dr. Murtadha's contributions to the field of education and social development have been numerous and impacting. Moreover, her push and resolve to impact the lives of others through education has not occurred without resistance and struggle. She is an inspiration and role model to the hundreds of CLD participants we nurture and challenge to pursue the highest levels of excellence in character, education, leadership, service, career, and life."

"Professor Murtadha's passion and commitment are a driving force in IUPUI's efforts to provide access, opportunity, and success at all levels of education in central Indiana," said IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz.

Presented by the Center for Leadership Development, the annual award gala allows Central Indiana business, educational and community leaders to come together and recognize minority professionals who have demonstrated high achievement in life's work and in providing valuable service to the community. In 2007, nearly 1,300 patrons attended the event.

IUPUI has been the beneficiary for nearly 30 years of CLD's hard work, receiving CLD alumni into its undergraduate and graduate programs and by hosting its events on campus.

In January of 2008, IUPUI formalized its commitment to CLD through a strategic partnership to increase the impact of its contributions to CLD and extend IUPUI's reach to more youths and their families in Indianapolis. Under the partnership, IUPUI will:

• Make IUPUI facilities available for CLD programming

• Sponsor CLD's Annual Minority Business and Professional Achievers Recognition Awards Dinner

• Provide facilitators for CLD programs such as:

o Self Discovery and Career Exploration

o Business Orientation Program

o Success Prep

o College Prep Institute

• Developing a campus alumni program to welcome, support, and mentor incoming and continuing CLD alumni enrolled at IUPUI.

IUPUI will also provide five scholarships for incoming freshmen to students who were involved in the Center for Leadership Development's college preparatory programs. The scholarships will be offered through the Norman Brown Diversity and Leadership Scholars Program, beginning in Fall 2009.

Each student selected as scholarship recipients will be provided with a guaranteed $3,000 scholarship. Students with additional financial need may also receive up to $3,000 in additional grant assistance from the program. Students that qualify for the maximum need based grant will also qualify for the federal Pell Grant which could provide a total award of over $10,000 in aid. The scholarship is renewable based upon successful completion of all program requirements
