IUPUI In-House Marketing Team Earns Five National Advertising Awards

IUPUI's Office of Communication & Marketing is a big winner in this year's 23rd Annual Admissions Advertising Awards, earning five awards - a "Best of Show," two Gold awards, one Bronze and a Merit award - in the nation's largest educational advertising competition.

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis snagged a prestigious "Best of Show" award for its "Where IMPACT is Made" campaign. Among universities with enrollments of 20,000 or more students, IUPUI won a Gold award for the "IMPACT" campaign, a Bronze award for JagTV's "The Spot" news/feature podcast, and a Merit award for health and life sciences podcasts.

IUPUI is one of 16 select universities to earn "Best of Show" awards in the national competition sponsored by the Admissions Marketing Report (AMR). The "IMPACT" campaign won the Gold award in the Total Advertising Package category.

AMR on Monday (Feb. 25, 2008) posted the winners list on its Web site. Awards and certificates recognize "exceptional quality, creativity and message effectiveness in the field of admissions marketing and advertising," AMR said in announcing the winners. The "Best of Show" awards are special commendations given to entrants that exhibit the "highest standards of excellence."

"Winning the 'Best of Show' just confirms what I do believe about our office," says Troy Brown, executive director of the IUPUI Office of Communications & Marketing (OCM). "I believe IUPUI has the in-house talent to make a difference in the marketing promotion and new media areas. This is a rare occurrence in higher ed."

For the second year in a row, the IUPUI Web site, an OCM production, took top honors in the national competition. The newly designed site, www.iupui.edu, which went live in December 2007, won the Gold Award in the Internet/Worldwide Web Site category. The new site replaced the IUPUI Web site that won the top award in the AMR competition a year ago.

IUPUI also won two awards in the New Media category: the Bronze Award for the JagTV "The Spot" podcasts and the Merit Award for the health and life sciences podcasts.

"I would rank our team's talents and knowledge with that of any team in the nation and any advertising agency in the country," Brown said. "The Admissions Marketing Report has become an advertising agency competition. I am proud to say that our in-house talent and the dedication to increase quality every year keeps IUPUI on top of the heap in the state and beyond."

Coined by Cabello and Associates for IUPUI's national campaign, the "Where IMPACT is Made" slogan is a spin-off from a section of the IUPUI Web site that talks about IUPUI's impact on Indianapolis, Indiana, and beyond.

In advance of the national campaign, OCM developed the local and regional advertising campaign that incorporates pictures from the IUPUI photo archives and the new slogan on highly visible billboards across Indianapolis and in various campus publications.

The combination of bold, in-your-face visuals and collaborating ad copy and full range placement is the trademark of any successful advertising campaign, the OCM executive director said.

Vision and a strong work ethic are considered the keys to OCM's ability to stay on top of the new media and garner accolades such as the Bronze award for "The Spot," a weekly podcast of campus news and feature stories. "The Spot" is broadcast across campus on JagTV, which plays on IUPUI Campus Cable Channel 14, Comcast Channel 13 and Brighthouse Channel 98. The podcast features segments filmed on location across campus and taped in studio with host Kaitlyn Christopher, an IUPUI senior.

"Electronic Media Manager Steve Hodges and crew have taken student talent and have turned in a top notch new media production," Brown said. "If you have to have talent, you can make anything work."

More than 1,000 colleges and universities submitted entries for this year's AMR competition. Judges included a panel of admissions' marketers, advertising and marketing professionals, and the AMR editorial board.

A complete list of winners is posted on the AMR web site at http://www.hmrpublicationsgroup.com/Admissions_Marketing_Report/amr_awards_competition.html . The March 2008 issue of AMR, a newsletter targeted specifically to admissions professionals, will also feature the winners list.
