Medical Humanities Announces Health Studies Spring Seminar Schedule


Medical Humanities has announced its spring 2008 schedule of health studies seminars. These events are free of charge and open to the public but seating is limited.

Seminars scheduled are:

• "A School Without Walls," with speaker David E. Matthews, M.D., associate professor of surgery, IU School of Medicine; noon to 1:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, University Library Auditorium.

This talk will demonstrate the value of cross-cultural experience in kindling a service-oriented career. Dr. Matthews spent four years doing surgery and directing a mission hospital in Cameroon, and five years in Kenya performing and teaching surgery.

• "Religious Values in the Health Marketplace: Stories from Catholic and Jewish Hospitals," with speaker David Craig, Ph.D., associate professor of religious studies at IUPUI; noon to 1 p.m., Tuesday, March 4, 2008, Lilly Medical Sciences Library, Room IB, 975 West Walnut St.

Based on interviews with 100 people in Catholic and Jewish health care, this talk presents stories of consumer-directed care, physician-owned specialty hospitals and other market-driven changes in health care.

• "Empathy in Medical Education," with speaker Emily Beckman, Ph.D., adjunct faculty, medical humanities¬ health studies; 1 to 2 p.m., Friday, April 25, 2008, Center for Bioethics, HITS Building, 410 W. 10th Street, Suite 3100.

This talk will discuss specific examples of literature and film that might bring about the development of empathy while suggesting a connection exists between imagination and empathy.
