UNITED WAY OF AMERICA, CENTER ON PHILANTHROPY
In a speech today at the Economic Club of Indiana, United Way of America President Brian Gallagher will announce that United Way of America and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University, located on the campus of IUPUI, will develop a new partnership made possible by a $6 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to United Way.
The collaboration among three of the nation's leading nonprofit sector organizations will include research and new training courses that will help develop future United Way leaders across the country and around the world.
"Both the Center on Philanthropy and the United Way of America will benefit from this partnership in exciting ways," said N. Clay Robbins, president of Lilly Endowment. "The Center on Philanthropy is a national leader in discovering and understanding philanthropy trends and translating that new knowledge into effective practices for nonprofits. United Way provides important leadership in identifying and meeting community needs in communities across the country. By joining forces, they will gain new insights into the changing dynamics of philanthropy and how United Ways can build on emerging opportunities."
The Lilly Endowment grant will help United Way of America, headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, expand its current in-house knowledge approach to training and create a more vigorous, well-coordinated set of educational experiences that brings together best practices, cutting-edge research and integrated talent development.
The Center on Philanthropy is a vital component of the learning program. The focus will initially be on research to better understand changes in philanthropy and the roles and relationships of local United Way organizations. United Way of America's Resident Fellows Program, which identifies and shapes executive-track leaders, will be a primary beneficiary of the training that is developed based on the Center's research.
"We are very happy to be embarking upon this important partnership with United Way of America, which has a long and impressive record of shaping philanthropy, and we are pleased that Lilly Endowment has chosen to make a grant that will enhance the work of both organizations," said Eugene R. Tempel, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy. "This collaboration will bring United Way executives from across the country, and ultimately from around the world, to Indianapolis to

learn at the Center. It also will offer the Center additional opportunities to take our research and training to the national capital region and to expand our international presence."
A respected national and international leader in philanthropy research, education and training, the Center on Philanthropy trains more than 8,000 nonprofit executives, fundraising professionals, board members and volunteers annually through its Fund Raising School, which will play a critical role in the partnership with United Way. The Center currently provides training nationwide and around the world as well as in Indianapolis and throughout Indiana.
"We are grateful for the ongoing support of Lilly Endowment and looking forward to collaborating with the Center on Philanthropy. Because we are a national and global network of community-based organizations, United Way is in a unique position to leverage learning capabilities and expand its impact across the country," said Brian Gallagher, president and CEO, United Way of America. "United Way can more effectively meet its mission to create lasting local change by truly becoming a learning organization."
