Kim Stewart-Brinston Named Interim Director of Multi-Cultural Center

Kim Stewart-Brinston will serve as Interim Director of the IUPUI Multicultural Center, IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz announced today.

Given her outstanding record in leading multicultural outreach efforts of the campus as the director of the Office of Multicultural Outreach, Bantz said Stewart-Brinston is the ideal candidate for the post.

She will begin her new duties February 15, and is expected to serve in that capacity for six months.

The chancellor and other campus officials will brief the campus community on Multicultural Center plans at 2:30 p.m. February 13. The Multicultural Center update session will be held in the University College main level commons area. Refreshments will be served.

"The Center is a critical element in building IUPUI's culture of student success," Bantz said."This is an important opportunity to launch the Center with the entrepreneurial leadership of Stewart-Brinston, bringing together ideas from the Multicultural Center Concept Committee and the Implementation Team, as well as bringing Stewart-Brinston's own experience and the faculty, staff, and students who are so enthusiastic about the Center."

Stewart-Brinston said she views the Multicultural Center as another resource that will help students of color connect with the campus, creating a welcoming environment and a synergy and community among underrepresented minority students as well as faculty and staff.

She hopes the Center will support, encourage, and help develop leadership skills among students in the same way that the Office of Multicultural Affairs did during her days as a student at IUPUI. Stewart-Brinston started as a student at IUPUI in 1991, graduating in 2003. While she was a student, she worked for Orientation, Financial Aid, was one of the first enrollment specialists and helped start the enrollment center. She was the first RA in international housing and was named in March 2006 Outstanding Woman Staff Leader.

Initiating preliminary programming and identifying needed resources are among her immediate goals, along with reaching out to student groups who asked for a "home" in the Multicultural Center.
