IUPUI Pedestrian Safety Campaign

IUPUI has started a campaign to increase awareness of pedestrian safety.

To kick off the campaign the campus has refurbished painted crosswalks, installed crosswalk warning signs and flashing yellow lights at several crosswalks on the IUPUI campus including ones on New York and Michigan Streets to help alert motorists and increase awareness of pedestrian safety.

The next segment of campaign will include the placing of portable electronic speed signs on campus streets displaying motorists' speeds to increase awareness of campus speed limits.

Although traffic enforcement will continue during the entire campaign there will be increased traffic enforcement by the combined efforts of the IUPUI and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Departments after the electronic sign segment has been completed.

Both drivers and pedestrians play a part in pedestrian safety.

Drivers need to:

Slow down and obey the posted speed limit

Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning at a green light and right on red

Look for stopped vehicles; they could be stopping for pedestrians. Indiana law requires all vehicles to stop if approaching a vehicle from the rear that has stopped at a crosswalk for a pedestrian.

Pedestrians need to:

Cross the street at marked cross walks and intersections

Stop and look every time before crossing the street

Use pedestrian push buttons and obey "walk" and "don't walk" signals

Make eye contact with drivers so they see you. Never assume they do.
