Chancellor Announces Selection of Vice Chancellor for Research

IUPUI Chancellor Charles R. Bantz today announced the selection of Dr. Kody Varahramyan as the Vice Chancellor for Research at IUPUI, pending approval by the IU Board of Trustees. Varahramyan is currently the Director of the Institute for Micromanufacturing and the Entergy Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering at Louisiana Tech University.

Kody Varahramyan will assume his new duties on July 1, 2008. He brings 15 years of academic experience at Louisiana Tech and 10 years of industrial experience at IBM Corporation. Varahramyan's academic experience includes appointments as Chair of the Electrical Engineering Program, Academic Director of the Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics Programs, and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Engineering and Science.

Named director of the interdisciplinary Institute for Micromanufacturing in 2000, Varahramyan led efforts to make it the largest, strongest, and most productive research enterprise at the university, focusing on five thrust areas and centers of excellence, organized and identified as Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Biomedical Nanotechnology, Environmental Technology, and Information Technology.

"Kody Varahramyan has proven himself as an energetic, visionary, and capable leader," Bantz said.

Before joining Louisiana Tech in 1992, Varahramyan served for 10 years as a member of the IBM's technical staff at the corporation's Microelectronics Research, Development, and Manufacturing operation at Essex Junction, Vermont, where he gained experience in research, development, manufacturing, and commercialization of leading-edge technologies at a world-class research, development and manufacturing facility.

In 1997, Varahramyan was designated as the Entergy Professor of Electrical Engineering, in recognition of accomplishments and contributions made to the university in the areas of teaching and curriculum development, research and scholarly activities, and service.

He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1977, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1979 and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1983.

Varahramyan will succeed Dr. Janice Froehlich, who currently serves as the Interim Vice Chancellor for Research at IUPUI. Froehlich is a Professor in the Department of Medicine with joint appointments as Professor of Cellular and Integrative Physiology and of Medical Neurobiology. She is a Scientific Co-Director of the Indiana Alcohol Research Center. She was designated a Chancellor's Professor in 2005 in recognition of her accomplishments and contributions to the university in the areas of research and scholarly activity, teaching, and service. As Interim Vice Chancellor for Research, she has played a leading role in the formation of new internal research support programs for IUPUI faculty, in establishing new collaborative research initiatives between IUPUI and Purdue University, and in assisting with the reorganization of IUPUI research administration.
