University Experts to Outline Global Warming and Its Implications

Climatic changes and their impact on society are the focus of Deans' Day lectures as the School of Liberal Arts and the School of Science at IUPUI present "Global Warning: An Environment for Change?" beginning at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2008. Sessions will be held in the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd., and Cavanaugh Hall, 425 University Blvd.
Descriptions of a few sessions during "Global Warning" follow:
Climate Change and Society: Lessons from the Past for the Future, 8:30 a.m., IUPUI Campus Center, 4th Floor. Geologist Gabriel M. Filippelli discusses past climatic changes and how information about these changes can be used in planning intelligently for future changes.
But What Can be Done? The Moral Dimensions of Global Warning, 10 a.m., Cavanaugh Hall, Room 219. Religious studies Professor David Craig discusses the moral tradeoffs and what attitudes and responses can help in determining moral action regarding the planet's warming.
The Influence of Climatic Variability on Human Migration and the Spread of HIV in Kenya, 10:50 a.m., Cavanaugh Hall, Room 219. Moi University (Eldoret, Kenya) geography Professor Gilbert M. Nduru discusses human migrations in Kenya and climatic seasonality and how related migrations are responsible for trends in the spread of HIV/AIDS in Kenya.
Predicted Effects of Global Warming, 10:50 a.m., Cavanaugh Hall, Room 223. IUPUI earth sciences Associate Professor Kathy J. Licht discusses predicted global impacts of a warming climate, as well as local environmental changes in Indiana.
