Forensic Science Expert to Head IUPUI Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology
Nationally-recognized forensic science expert Jay A. Siegel will head the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) beginning February 1.
"Jay Siegel's record of excellence in forensic science and chemistry education, as well as his efforts to translate academic research to industrial and law enforcement applications, makes him an ideal leader for the department," said William F. Bosron, interim dean of the School of Science. "His dedication to promoting interdisciplinary study will take the chemistry program to the forefront of research and academic activity."
Siegel came to IUPUI in 2004 when he established the state's first, and only, undergraduate degree program in forensic and investigative sciences. Since then, the number of students enrolled in the program has tripled, and forensics experts in DNA and explosives have joined the faculty.
Siegel holds a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from George Washington University and is the author of numerous papers, journal articles and two textbooks. His research focuses on the chemical analysis of ink dyes, fibers and cosmetic products.
"IUPUI is an impact player in the state's health and life sciences economy," said Siegel. "Our chemistry graduates are employed across a broad spectrum of life sciences companies, and our faculty are engaged in significant research with biological components—from the study of proteins to drug discovery."
"Today's chemistry is dynamic and interdisciplinary. I look forward to working with my colleagues across campus and throughout industry to attain greater levels of achievement in collaborative research and teaching."
The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology offers programs culminating in Ph.D. and master's degrees, American Chemical Society-certified and pre-professional bachelor's degrees and an associate degree. Nearly 200 students are enrolled in those programs. The department also trains students who seek degrees in health fields like nursing and dentistry.
