ACADEMIC AFFAIRS ANNOUNCES RESTRUCTURING OF SUPPORT FOR FACULTY AT IUPUI

Beginning January, 2008, faculty seeking campus-level support for teaching, research, service, promotion and tenure, sabbaticals, and recognition for their work will discover a change. Over the past several months, the former Office for Professional Development (OPD) has been restructured in the following ways to meet the needs of faculty in a comprehensive yet more effective manner:

1. The formation of the new Consortium for Learning and Scholarship, a strategic alliance of the three large Centers that formerly existed in OPD: The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the Center for Research and Learning (CRL), and the Center for Service and Learning (CSL). The CTL will continue to work with full-time and part-time faculty across the campus to achieve excellence in teaching and learning. The CRL, with its focus on undergraduate research, will provide curricular and pedagogical support for faculty wishing to mentor students in undergraduate research (in collaboration with the CTL), while continuing to support the students involved in major undergraduate research programs. The CSL, in collaboration with the CTL, will continue to provide curricular and pedagogical support for faculty who engage students in service learning as part of their course work, while providing conceptual oversight of the campus mission for civic engagement. The three Centers that comprise the new Consortium for Learning and Scholarship (CLS) will work together to provide a solid core of faculty support for aspects related to the mission, vision, and values of IUPUI, and aligned with the traditional responsibilities of faculty for teaching, research, and service. A separate press release with more detailed information about the Consortium will follow.

2. The expansion of the mission of the former Academic Policies and Procedures Documentation (APPD) and consequent change of name to Faculty Appointments and Advancement (FAA). This office provides support for faculty from hiring to retiring, and includes new faculty orientation (in collaboration with CTL), guidance and support for promotion and tenure, sabbaticals, rewards and recognition, faculty life, support for underrepresented faculty, support for chairs and deans, and the development of the electronic Faculty Annual Report.

3. The Office for Women, currently housed in Academic Affairs, will continue to provide support for women faculty in all aspects of their academic lives at IUPUI.

4. The work of the former Office for Multicultural Professional Development of Faculty will be shared among the new Multicultural Center, the Center for Teaching and Learning, and Academic Affairs. Further information will be forthcoming following the appointment of the new Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Administrative oversight for the professional development, support, and advancement of faculty will be provided by Associate Vice Chancellor, Sharon Hamilton. Any questions or concerns or comments about this transition should be directed to her at shamilto@iupui.edu.
