IUPUI Volunteers Dedicate King Holiday to Community Service

More than 350 IUPUI students, staff, faculty members and community guests will spend the Dr. Martin Luther King Holiday working as volunteers at more than 25 area nonprofit community service agencies.

While classes are closed for the holiday, IUPUI will observe Monday (Jan. 21) as the 2008 IUPUI Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. The Day of Service is an IUPUI tradition of living out King's legacy of civic engagement by spending the holiday named in his honor as a "day on" of community service.

This year's event will be observed from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Jan. 21.The Day of Service will begin with a volunteer breakfast at 8 a.m. in the new IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd.

Giovanni, a professor at Virginia Tech, is also to deliver the keynote address during the IUPUI Dr. Martin Luther King Dinner which begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 21, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Indianapolis.

After breakfast, volunteers will report in groups to assigned service sites where they will assist non-profit organizations in various tasks. Service locations include: Christamore House, Habitat for Humanity, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis Animal Care & Control, Julia Center, Second Helpings, Ronald McDonald House, can Wheeler Mission Ministries.
