Does Indiana need a Truth and Reconciliation Commission?
Dr. Jim Loewen, the author of "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your High School History Textbook Got Wrong" and also "Lies Across America," will address the issue of whether a truth and reconciliation commission would be beneficial during a presentation at 5:30 p.m. Monday, November 12, in University Library, Room 1126.
Loewen, a visiting professor of Sociology, Catholic University of America, tackles the disturbing history and legacy of 'sundown towns' in his latest award winning book on the hidden dimension of American racism. From Maine to California, and especially in mid-west states like Indiana, thousands of communities kept out African Americans by force, law, or custom. Some towns in Indiana are still all white on purpose. How do we break the silence barrier? How do we move beyond denial, make amends, and move forward as a united community? Would Indiana benefit from a truth and reconciliation commission?
The presentation is sponsored by IUPUI University College, the IUPUI African American and African Diaspora Studies Program, the Political Engagement Project and Democracy Plaza, the Office of Campus and Community Life, the IUPUI History Department, and the Black Law Students Association.
