IU Vice President of International Affairs Patrick O'Meara has announced that Susan Buck Sutton has been named associate vice president of International Affairs for Indiana University and associate vice chancellor of International Affairs for IUPUI.

Sutton, Chancellor's Professor of Anthropology at IUPUI, will continue to oversee the IUPUI Office of International Affairs, which has a staff of about 35 employees and serves as IUPUI's hub of international activities. It is responsible for developing campus-wide infrastructure for international engagement such as strategic international partnerships; recruiting, advising, and admitting international students and providing visa services for international scholars; coordinating IUPUI study abroad activities, internationalizing curricula, managing International House, and facilitating international teaching and learning via the Global Crossroads videoconferencing facility. The office also houses the IU Center on Southeast Asia.

Sutton's areas of expertise include research, teaching, and program development directed toward fostering cross-cultural perspectives, collaboration, and understandings concerning globalization, social and cultural diversity, cultural contact and change, and immigration and the construction of migrant communities, neighborhoods, and organizations.

Sutton, who received her doctorate in anthropology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1978, has been associate dean of international affairs since 2003. She has been a professor of anthropology at IUPUI since 1998 and was an associate professor of anthropology at the campus from 1986 to 1998. She was an assistant professor from 1978 to 1986. Sutton was named Chancellor's Professor in 2003. She also serves on the executive committees of the Association of International Education Administrators and the American Anthropological Association, and is a member of the International Center of Indianapolis' board of directors.
