Janet Cheatham Bell
Janet Cheatham Bell, publishing entrepreneur

IUPUI University Library will host a reading of Janet Cheatham Bell's new memoir, The Time and Place That Gave Me Life, at 7 p.m., on Thursday, June 21, 2007, at Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School. A book signing and a discussion with Bell, IUPUI faculty and other community representatives about the importance of preserving local neighborhood history will follow the reading.

Crispus Attucks High School is located at 1140 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. For event parking, attendees should use the high school's 11th Street parking lot.

Co-sponsored by the Indiana University Press and the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, the reading is free and open to the public.

Prior to the reading, the Crispus Attucks Museum, located on the Attucks campus, will open to visitors at 6:30 p.m.

The Time and Place That Gave Me Life, published by Indiana University Press (www.iupress.indiana.edu), is due in stores next month.

Billed as "a coming-of-age" memoir that confronts race and gender issues in middle America during the pre-Civil Rights era," the book opens with Bell's early years growing up in Indianapolis in the 1940's and 50's. With candor and conviction, she describes how race and racial discrimination shaped her life, remembering her first job as a maid in a wealthy white household; the humiliations she faced at a "white" high school; and later encounters with racism as a young woman at Indiana University Bloomington. Bell's book interweaves her personal recollections with memorable snippets of local history that make the memoir a valuable contribution to the record of Indianapolis' social history.

A widely recognized publishing entrepreneur, Janet Cheatham Bell is also the author of Till Victory is Won: Famous Black Quotations from the NAACP (Washington Square Press, Simon & Schuster, 2002). Bell, a Bloomington, Ind., resident, is a former education consultant for the Indiana Department of Education and has taught African American literature at a number of colleges and universities.
