IUPUI’s Live Link to the Middle East: Israel/Palestine Seeking Peaceful Coexistence
Two professors at Hebrew University of Jerusalem—one who is Israeli and one who is Palestinian—will connect via videoconference with IUPUI to discuss their perspectives on and work toward peaceful coexistence.
The conversation will take place at 12:00-1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 22 in ES 2132, the new state-of-the-art Global Crossroads Laboratory, a campus resource designed for international dialogue.
The speakers are Professor Zvi Bekerman (Education) and Professor Muhammad Haj-Yahia (Social Work and Social Welfare). In addition to his appointment in the School of Education, Dr. Bekerman is a Research Fellow at the Truman Institute for the Advancement of Peace at Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His main interests are in the study of cultural, ethnic and national identity, including identity processes and negotiation during intercultural encounters and in formal/informal learning contexts. He is also the editor of Diaspora, Indigenous, and Minority Education: An International Journal.
Dr. Haj-Yahia's research areas include mental health consequences of violence against women, psychological effects of child abuse and neglect, children in war areas, and community violence. He is on the professional steering committees of several centers for the prevention of family violence in Israel. He has organized conferences on women activists in Palestinian society, which were the first conferences of this kind in the Arab world.
This is the second of IUPUI's Live Link to the Middle East series organized by the Office of International Affairs. For more information, contact Craig Lee at 317-418-1982 or Ian McIntosh at imcintos@iupui.edu or visit http://international.iupui.edu.
