INDIANAPOLIS - Is Police Academy really that tough?
Citizens who would like to get a taste of the training that rookie police officers undergo are invited to register now for the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Citizen Police Academy.
The Indiana University Police Department at IUPUI is now accepting applications for its Citizen Police Academy scheduled to begin Sept. 5, 2006.
"The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to increase understanding of the duties and responsibilities of University Police Officers," said IUPUI Police Sgt. Jerry Baker. "This can foster cooperative problem solving between police and the University Community."
Classes in the 12-week Citizen Police Academy session will meet from 6 to 9 p.m., every Tuesday, starting Sept. 5.
Applications are available at the Campus Police Headquarters, 1232 W. Michigan St., on the IUPUI Campus. For online applications, go to the on-line application form available on the IUPUI Police Department Home page.
Citizen Police Academy is free of charge to participants. Course topics include: Police training; use of force; patrol duties, bicycle patrol, crime scene investigation and fingerprint development. In addition, academy participants can train with the Firearms Automated Training System F.A.T.S. (no live fire shooting). Traffic stop scenarios and the department's Ride-A-Long program also will be available.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and be subject to a criminal history check.
