IU School of Nursing Receives $1.3 Million NIH Grant to Train Nurse Researchers for the Future

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana University School of Nursing (IUSON) has received a $1.3 million, 5-year Institutional National Research Service Award (T-32) from the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is the 16th year of funding for the School, an accomplishment only a handful of other schools of nursing have achieved.
The prestigious grant provides financial support to train three students who are studying for their PhDs and for three more nurses with PhDs to become clinical researchers. The purpose of the T32 training program at the IUSON will be to train nurse investigators to conduct research that promotes well-being and enhances health-related quality of life in persons with chronic illness, such as stroke, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease.
"The 4th successful competing renewal of the pre and post doctoral training grant was exceptional for the School and the State of Indiana. As the only PhD program in Indiana, it is incumbent on the IUSON at IUPUI to prepare future nurse scientists who will develop and test highly effective interventions that can improve the quality of life of individuals with a chronic illness. The nurse scientists, and their colleagues from other health science schools, are the bedrock on which exceptional doctoral training is built. This award recognizes the excellence of the health sciences research programs at IUPUI," said Marion E. Broome, PhD, RN, FAAN, University Dean and Distinguished Professor, IU School of Nursing.
Dr. Joan K. Austin, DNS, RN, FAAN, Distinguished Professor, Sally Reahard Chair in the Center for Enhancing Quality of Life in Chronic Illness, and internationally known expert on mental health problems in children with epilepsy, is the director of the training program. Co-directors of the grant are Susan Pressler, DNS, RN, FAAN, Professor and leading researcher on quality of life among patients with chronic heart failure, and Joan Haase, PhD, RN, Emily Holmquist Professor for Pediatric Oncology Nursing, whose research focuses on resilience and quality of life in adolescents and young adults with cancer. Dr. Pressler serves as director of pre-doctoral training and Dr. Haase serves as director of post-doctoral training.
