Ray Ellis’ Sport Paintings to Come to National Art Museum of Sport

(Originally published October 6, 2006)

INDIANAPOLIS - "Spirit of Sport," a collection of 30 sport paintings by Ray Ellis of Martha's Vineyard, Mass., will be exhibited Oct. 11 to Dec. 15, 2006, at the National Art Museum of Sport at University Place Conference Center and Hotel on the IUPUI campus.

Ellis is especially known for his sailing scenes, and collaborated with Walter Cronkite, the noted CBS news anchor, on three fine art books of watercolors depicting sailing. However, his range of sports scenes is broad and includes golf, baseball, fishing and hunting.

He is also known for his non-sports painting such as florals and scenes of Martha's Vineyard and the Savannah, Ga., area, where he maintains a gallery. While vacationing in Martha's Vineyard, former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton commissioned Ellis to paint watercolors of the White House for the President's and First Lady's annual holiday greetings. He did a series of three.

The National Art Museum of Sport's permanent collection includes Ellis' oil, "Defending the Green Monster" of the Boston Red Sox's Fenway Park , and the noted players who defended the famous left field wall. The collection also includes his "Cobb Slide" of Ty Cobb and commemorative versions of the three White House holiday cards.

The National Art Museum of Sport, founded in 1959, is one of the nation's largest collections of art depicting sport. It is open to the public free of charge from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Museum receives support from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, City of Indianapolis and the Regional Arts Partnership of the Indiana Arts Commission.
