Inmate Freed With Help of IU School of Law-Indianapolis Students Gets $4.5 Million Civil Settlement

Sep. 5, 2008 — Seven years ago, with the help of IU School of Law-Indianapolis Professor Fran Hardy and four of her students, Larry Mayes of Gary, Indiana, was set free from prison based on DNA testing. This week a federal court approved a $4.5 million settlement for Mayes - who before his release spent 21 years in prison for a rape conviction.   Full Story

Kenneth Crews

Professor of Law

Professor Crews joined the faculty of the School of Law in 1994 was made full professor in 2000. He holds a unique position at the university, with a joint appointment in the School of Library and Information Science and an administrative post as director of the university's Copyright Management Center.

Before joining the IU faculty, he practiced law in Los Angeles, co-founded a nonprofit business association, and taught business law at a campus of the California State University. Much of his work today focuses on copyright law, and he is involved in many efforts to develop national policy, especially as applied to teaching and research in higher education.

He spent the academic year 2000-2001 on sabbatical and in residence at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Patent, Copyright, and Competition Law in Munich, Germany. He teaches every year in The Munich Intellectual Property Law Center (see www.miplc.de)
